Who Is Jesus?

Jesus is...   the author and finisher of our faith.  (Hebrews 12:2)

Jesus made seven “I am” statements recorded in the gospel of John. These are not theological definitions of who He is, they are invitations to experience Him in our lives.

“I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35)

Jesus is the source of life. He is your spiritual food. The deep needs of your heart that you try to satisfy with things of this world can only be satisfied by Him. He desires to fill you, to satisfy you, to replace your emptiness and longing with the fullness of His joy and peace. The secret, thirsty one, is to believe. Just listen to Jesus’ promises and believe Him.

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
When everything ahead is dark and uncertain; when we are filled with confusion and turmoil; look to Jesus and follow Him where He leads you. The murky mist of fear and doubt will evaporate. The source and destiny of your life will become clear. The glorious hope of living happily in the warm embrace of the Father of love will dawn in your heart.

“I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.” (John 10:9)
Jesus is inviting you right now to come in to Him. He is the only door, but that door is always open. He is not the door to a place of confinement. When you enter by Him, you come out to a spacious pasture of freedom. There you will find peace and fullness, rest and refreshment. Come and lie down in His green pastures!

“I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.” (John 10:14-15)
Jesus loves you. These words may sound childish until you hear them in your heart from the voice of Jesus. They will become the most precious words you’ve ever heard! They are the promise of knowing Him and, more wonderful by far, being known by Him as His own. He has already laid down His life for you. Oh, don’t be separated from Him by pride! You can become His own in a moment, once you are willing to lay down your self sufficiency and become as a little lamb.

“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.” (John 11:25-26)

Jesus was crucified for you, but he could not remain dead. Death had no power over Him. Are you experiencing death in this life? Our sickness, unhappiness, loneliness, torment, bitterness … are all symptoms of death and we know them all well before our bodies finally die. Jesus is resurrection. He is life. When you trust Him with any part of your troubles, though you die, you will live. You will overcome the power of death in Jesus, for He has already overcome.

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
Truth isn’t about doctrines, principles, beliefs – it is a person. Jesus is truth because Jesus is the perfect picture of his Father. He is all you need to know of God. You can’t know God another way because there isn’t another God to know. If you are offended by Jesus, you are really offended by His Father. But, oh! if you are drawn to the love and mercy of Jesus, you are drawn to God himself. Come to Him and find the way. Find life!

“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)
You can bear so much good fruit in your life. The sweet, nourishing fruit of love that tastes so good to another hungry person and brings them strength and life. But you are only the branch! The nutrients must flow from the vine itself, from Jesus Himself. You can’t really do a useful thing apart from Him. But in that intimate friendship where His life and love are flowing into you, you will overflow to those around. Beautiful, delicious fruit!
